SkyUp is shaking up the European skies not just with its low fares but also its young, fuel-efficient fleet. The airline only launched in 2018, so it has had the advantage of building its fleet from the ground up with the latest aircraft models. This allows SkyUp to operate flights more economically and sustainably compared to legacy carriers still operating older planes.

The backbone of SkyUp's fleet is the Boeing 737 MAX 8, an advanced and controversial narrow-body jet. SkyUp was actually the first European carrier to take delivery of the MAX in 2019 after its global grounding. The airline expressed confidence in the aircraft's improved design and safety features. With a range of over 3,000 miles, the MAX 8 grants SkyUp the flexibility to serve destinations across Europe and the Middle East from its bases in Ukraine.

These brand new jets also emit over 15% less carbon dioxide compared to older 737s. Their LEAPengines are quieter and burn less fuel. While flying greener is admirable on its own, it also translates into cost savings for SkyUp to pass onto passengers. The carrier expects to have 22 MAX 8s in operation by 2023.

In addition to the MAX 8, SkyUp also utilizes the smaller Boeing 737-800 for flights within Ukraine and to nearby countries. The -800 is a bit older but still offers better fuel efficiency than early 737 generations. With 144 seats, it provides the right-sized capacity for regional routes.

By limiting its fleet to just two next-generation 737 variants, SkyUp enjoys lower maintenance and pilot training costs. Its crew only needs a single type rating to switch between the MAX and -800 models. Streamlining operations this way enables SkyUp to undercut legacy rivals burdened by varied, aging fleets.
