When a flight is canceled, it can be immensely frustrating trying to secure refunds or rebook travel plans. However, passengers do have certain rights in these situations that can help the process go more smoothly. Understanding exactly what protections travelers are entitled to is key for getting the compensation you deserve from an airline.

One of the most important rights air passengers have is entitlement to a full refund if a flight is canceled and the passenger chooses not to travel. The refund should be provided within 7 days by the original form of payment if you do not accept an alternate routing. This applies even for non-refundable tickets. You also have a right to meals, refreshments, and accommodation provided by the airline if delayed overnight.

For EU flights, EC Regulation 261 provides even more extensive protections. Passengers can receive €250-€600 in compensation for flight cancellations depending on the flight distance. Missed connections also qualify if it ultimately results in a delay of 3+ hours in arriving at your final destination. Importantly, compensation eligibility is not dependent on the cause of the cancellation. Even if it is outside the airline's control, you are still due recompense.

When facing a cancellation, be sure to document everything. Save screenshots showing the flight status and any communications with the airline. Photograph airport signage announcing the cancellation if applicable. This evidence will be invaluable if you need to escalate your claim. Also jot down names of any airline representatives you speak with and precisely what they tell you.

While airlines will often cite extraordinary circumstances to avoid paying compensation, this exemption is narrowly defined. Technical faults, lack of flight crew, or most weather events do not qualify. You can contest an initial denial by appealing directly to the airline and presenting evidence the cancellation does not meet the extraordinary circumstances threshold.
