Chasing Sunshine: The Best Destinations for Soaking Up Vitamin D All Year Round - Escape the Winter Blues in Hawaii's Tropical Paradise

Chasing Sunshine: The Best Destinations for Soaking Up Vitamin D All Year Round

As the days grow shorter and the temperatures drop, many find themselves longing for sunny skies and warm breezes. For those looking to escape the winter blues, Hawaii's tropical paradise provides the perfect antidote. With rarely a cloud in sight and average temperatures in the 80s year-round, the Hawaiian Islands offer a sanctuary of perpetual summer.

From December through March, when much of the mainland US is bundled up against freezing temps, Hawaii sees its peak visitor season. And it's no wonder why. The thought of spending winter break basking on Hawaii's world-famous beaches, surrounded by swaying palms, sparkling azure waters, and azure skies, is enough to melt away any case of the chills.

Beyond the beaches, Hawaii's incredible natural landscapes allow you to choose your own adventure. Hike through volcanic craters in Haleakala National Park, scope out sea turtles and humpback whales on a snorkeling cruise off Maui, or view cascading waterfalls and emerald valleys on the Road to Hana. The outdoor recreation opportunities are endless. And with avg highs in the 80s, you can comfortably enjoy them in shorts and a t-shirt all winter long.
Of course, no trip to Hawaii is complete without experiencing the spirit of aloha, which infuses island life. Spend lazy days beach hopping along the Kohala Coast, then recharge with a lomi lomi massage at a beachside spa. Take a stab at stand up paddleboarding or learn to surf - the patient instructors and warm water make it ideal for beginners. Cap off days of adventure by watching the sunset with a fruity cocktail in hand, then indulging in the bounty of fresh local cuisine, from juicy ahi tuna poke to tender kalua pork.

With new direct flights from more mainland cities, getting to Hawaii is easier than ever. And increased competition has driven down airfares, making the islands more accessible. Once prohibitively expensive in high season, you can now find winter air-hotel packages to Hawaii starting around $500 per person - an incredible value.

Oahu: Home to famous Waikiki Beach and Honolulu, it's the most visited Hawaiian island. With its mix of city sights and nature, it's ideal for first-timers. Stay in buzzy Waikiki or quieter parts of the island.
Maui: With some of Hawaii's most famous beaches, along with great resorts, golf, and adventures, Maui is perfect for an active tropical getaway. Top spots include Kaanapali, Wailea, and upcountry Kula.
Kauai: Known as the Garden Isle, Kauai wows with its lush jungle valleys, sculpted sea cliffs, and postcard-worthy beaches. Head to Poipu for resorts or Hanalei for surf town charm.

Chasing Sunshine: The Best Destinations for Soaking Up Vitamin D All Year Round - Soak Up the Rays in Australia's Sun-Drenched Cities

As the Northern Hemisphere shivers through winter, Australia's sunny cities beckon. While often thought of mainly for its Outback adventures, the land Down Under boasts some incredibly vibrant urban centers where you can soak up the rays in style.

Sydney is arguably Australia's most famous city, and for good reason. Sitting on one of the world's largest natural harbors, its beautiful beaches, iconic landmarks like the Sydney Opera House, and charming historic neighborhoods make it a delight to explore.

"Sydney turned out to be the perfect sunny winter escape," said Clara, who visited from London. "I enjoyed walking across the Sydney Harbor Bridge, watching the ferries come and go below. Then I'd cool off with a swim at Bondi Beach and get some sun while people-watching - the vibe there was so fun and relaxed."

Besides its famous shoreline, Sydney also boasts an array of museums, galleries, world-class restaurants led by celebrity chefs, and exciting neighborhoods like Darling Harbour and The Rocks where you can shop, eat and drink with views of the water. With over 11 hours of sunshine per day in winter, you'll have plenty of time to experience it all.

Melbourne, often ranked as one of the world's most livable cities, boasts a hip, artsy vibe. Wander through its many laneways splashed with vibrant street art, then relax in a local cafe or check out its fantastic food scene.

"I loved exploring Melbourne's neighborhoods, each with its own unique flavor," said Liam, visiting from Chicago. "Brunswick has cool street art and shops, while St Kilda Beach felt like summer with people exercising, playing volleyball, and strolling the promenade. At night, the city really comes alive."

Visiting in August, Liam also enjoyed Melbourne's varied nightlife, from buzzy rooftop bars with city views to clubs hosting world-class DJs. The Melbourne International Comedy Festival also provided plenty of laughs. With over 9 hours of daily sunshine in winter, there was plenty of time to experience it all.
Brisbane, set in Queensland where endless summer feels like a way of life, boasts beautiful weather year-round. Situated on the Brisbane River, it offers great outdoor activities from paddleboarding to beach trips. Trendy inner-city suburbs like Fortitude Valley and South Bank beg to be explored on foot.

"Coming from London, it felt amazing to be in a place with warm weather and sunshine even in July," said Emma. "In Brisbane, we'd start the day with a walk along the riverfront, grab lunch at an outdoor cafe, then head to the beach. I loved the chance to relax outside every day - it made winter truly feel like summer."

With an average of over 7 hours of sunshine per day in winter, Brisbane lets you enjoy its parks, outdoor restaurants and nearby beaches while much of the world bundles up.

Chasing Sunshine: The Best Destinations for Soaking Up Vitamin D All Year Round - Follow the Sun to the Canary Islands' Year-Round Spring

As winter sets in across Europe and North America, consider following the sun to the Canary Islands. This Spanish archipelago off the coast of Morocco enjoys warm temperatures year-round, with endless sunshine and average highs around 22°C (72°F) even in January and February. You can leave the puffy jacket at home and bask in the islands' eternally spring-like weather instead.

"We were looking to escape the cold German winter, and the Canary Islands were the perfect solution," explained Silke, who visited Tenerife with her family. "Within a few hours we went from near-freezing temps to lounging at the beach in our swimsuits soaking up the sun."

The largest and most visited of the Canaries, Tenerife boasts picturesque villages, the stunning Teide volcano, and golden sand beaches. The island sees over 7 hours of daily sunshine even in winter.

"We loved exploring the cute historic towns like Garachico and La Orotava in the north of the island," Silke said. "But our favorite part was spending whole days at the beach just relaxing under the warm sun - it felt amazing coming from Germany in February!"

Gran Canaria, the second most populous of the islands, is known for its beautiful beaches and charming villages as well. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean's temperate waters, you can swim comfortably here while spots further north are frigid.

"I'm not usually much of a beach person, but I was totally converted in Gran Canaria," explained Leo, visiting from London. "Laying out on the soft sand with the sound of waves and warmth of the sun was so rejuvenating - a welcome break from the cold dreary weather back home."

Gran Canaria sees over 8 hours of sunshine per day in winter, with temps staying in the 70s. Besides relaxing at the beach, Leo also enjoyed the island's natural beauty: "Hiking the trails of Roque Nublo and exploring villages like Teror and Galdar gave us a taste of Gran Canaria beyond the resorts."

Lanzarote, the easternmost Canary Isle, captivates with its otherworldly volcanic landscape and turquoise waters. Visit the Trodo de Famara cliffs or the beaches of Papagayo - said to be among the best in Spain. Or, explore Timanfaya National Park's surreal lava fields and volcanic craters by bus, camel, or even bike.
"It was like visiting another planet!" said Mariam, who traveled to Lanzarote from the UK. "The volcanic landscapes were so unique, with these crazy multi-colored rock formations. And the black sand beaches were incredible too - I soaked up the sunshine all day."

Chasing Sunshine: The Best Destinations for Soaking Up Vitamin D All Year Round - Bask on Brazil's Endless Beaches and Sunny Coastline

Brazil boasts over 4,600 miles of coastline, offering an endless expanse of sun-soaked beaches. While Rio de Janeiro may be the first Brazilian destination to come to mind, the country is filled with lesser known sunny coastal gems waiting to be discovered.

“After an icy winter in Chicago, I was craving warmth and sunshine. So I planned a two week road trip up Brazil’s northeast coast to escape the cold,” explained Tyler. “It was the best decision ever - I found myself in a different world, where I could relax on the beach every day with temps in the 80s.”

Tyler started his sunny sojourn in busy Salvador, taking in the colorful colonial architecture of the historic Pelourinho neighborhood. He then worked his way north via scenic coastal drives, stopping to soak up the sunshine and sink his toes in the sand at secluded beaches dotted with palm trees.

“I loved discovering small fishing villages that felt frozen in time, with locals casting their nets along breathtaking strands,” he said. “In some spots I had entire beaches to myself, with just the sound of waves and swaying palms. After Chicago’s freezing winter, it felt like paradise.”

“I tried kite surfing for the first time in Natal - it was such a rush to zip over the warm waves pulled by the huge kite as the sun shone down,” described Alicia. “And floating in the bath-like ocean was amazing after time spent bundled up back home.”

Alicia also delighted in Natal’s fresh and flavorful cuisine, like grilled seafood skewers seasoned with coconut and lime. At night, she joined locals celebrating with forró music and dancing on the beach by firelight.

“I fell in love with Jericoacoara, a hip beach village seemingly endless sunshine,” said James. “My days blended together in a haze of beach lounging, fresh seafood, and watersports - everything from sailing to surfing in the calm turquoise waters.”

Further north near Brazil's border with French Guiana, you’ll find the islands of Fernando de Noronha - an archipelago renowned for its world-class diving and snorkeling. Swim alongside sea turtles and spot spinner dolphins frolicking as you bask in the tropical sunshine.
“The diving at Fernando de Noronha was mind-blowing - like swimming in a National Geographic special,” described Katie. “Equally amazing was just spending whole days relaxing beachside - I'd take my kindle and alternate reading with cooling off in the sea.”

Chasing Sunshine: The Best Destinations for Soaking Up Vitamin D All Year Round - Feel the Heat in Dubai's Desert Sunshine All Year Long

With sweltering summer heat that makes outdoor activity challenging from June through September, you may be surprised to learn that winter is actually peak season for visiting Dubai. While temperatures remain warm compared to wintry spots further north, Dubai sees sunny blue skies throughout the "cooler" months, making it perfect for relaxing poolside or exploring the city’s sights.
“Coming from London in January, Dubai was like entering a different world,” described Asha. “Back home it was grey, rainy, and frigid. But in Dubai, I could comfortably wear summer dresses and sandals every day.”

During the day, Asha marveled at Dubai's incredible architecture, like the Burj Khalifa - the world's tallest building. She indulged in retail therapy at the enormous Dubai Mall, browsed the wares of traditional souks, and admired the Palm Jumeirah man-made archipelago from a boat tour.
“The heat could be intense by afternoon, so I'd plan my days around it. Mornings were perfect for sightseeing, then I'd chill at the pool after lunch before heading out again early evening when the temperatures cooled.”

Oliver visited Dubai in February to escape the biting cold and dreary weather in Chicago. “Back home, I’d be bundled up in my warmest coat just to take out the trash,” he laughed. “But in Dubai I could comfortably wear shorts and flip flops as I walked around the marina admiring the glittering skyline and luxury yachts.”

During his trip, Oliver went dune bashing in the desert, zooming over undulating amber sand dunes in a 4x4. He then watched a magical desert sunset, followed by a barbecue dinner under the stars at a Bedouin style camp.

“The heat of the midday sun was intense, but in February it was manageable with temperatures around 75°F.” Oliver said. “I was happy to escape winter back home. The warmth and sunshine boosted my mood and energy.”

Melanie, visiting from Toronto, delighted in Dubai's balmy weather and copious sunshine during December. “Back in Canada, it was already bitterly cold with several feet of snow, so arriving in Dubai felt like entering an eternal summer.”

“It was wild to go skiing in the morning then be out in the sun in a t-shirt afterward,” she remarked. “The mix of winter activities and warm weather made a unique vacation.”

Chasing Sunshine: The Best Destinations for Soaking Up Vitamin D All Year Round - Head South of the Equator for Ecuador's Eternal Summer

As cold weather descends in the northern hemisphere, consider heading south of the equator to Ecuador to escape the chill and soak up the sunshine. Situated right on the equator, Ecuador enjoys warm temperatures and sunny skies nearly year-round, making it an ideal destination for a rejuvenating dose of vitamin D.

“I wanted a real change of scenery from the cold, overcast days back home in Ohio,” explained Amy, who visited Ecuador in February. “Just a few hours after leaving behind snowy weather in the 30s, I found myself in the 80s surrounded by palm trees, beaches, and endless sunshine.”

Amy started her visit in Quito, Ecuador’s mountainous capital city, exploring lively plazas and Baroque churches in the well-preserved colonial center. But she soon headed west for the coast.

“Arriving in the beach town of Montañita was like walking into summer,” she said. “There were people surfing, doing yoga on the beach, and just hanging out enjoying the sunshine and warmth.”

By spending time along Ecuador’s coast - like relaxing seaside in Montañita or wildlife watching in Puerto López - Amy was able to bliss out on the beach in summer-like conditions during winter months back home.

Mark, visiting from Berlin, found the same sunny escape from winter in Salinas. “I walked the beautiful beach lined with palms and watched the sunset over the Pacific each evening,” he described. “During the day, I enjoyed swimming in the warm ocean - much better than the frigid Baltic Sea back home this time of year!”

“While it was amazing to experience so many incredible natural sights, my favorite part of visiting Ecuador was simply relaxing oceanside, feeling the warmth of the tropical sun,” said Mark. “The cold German winter felt so far away.”

Canada resident Sarah visited Ecuador in July - wintertime back home. “In Toronto, it would be freezing, but in Ecuador I could wear summer clothes and sandals every day,” she remarked. “It was amazing to walk Quito’s colonial streets seeing the sun-drenched Andes Mountains in the distance instead of boring grey skies.”

During her trip, Sarah hiked through cloud forests thick with exotic vegetation and marvelled at views of majestic Cotopaxi Volcano. “After being cooped up all winter, just being outside and active felt so invigorating,” she said.

Chasing Sunshine: The Best Destinations for Soaking Up Vitamin D All Year Round - Enjoy California's Famous Sunny Skies and Surf

When the winter blues set in across much of the country, California beckons with its famous sunny skies and miles of spectacular coastline. From San Diego in the south to Mendocino in the north, the Golden State boasts an embarrassment of riches when it comes to enjoying the beach and soaking up rays during the chillier months.

“I grew up dealing with Illinois winters, so when I moved to San Diego it was like discovering paradise,” said Paige. “In January, when it’s below freezing back home, I can still go the beach daily here and even surf in a wetsuit if I want.”

Further north, Santa Barbara and its surrounding coastline have been attracting sun-seekers escaping gloomy weather for over a century now. “It feels like the entire town is designed for enjoying the amazing climate here,” explained Ryan, visiting from Boston. “I’d start my day walking the waterfront, then grab an outdoor table for lunch on State Street before hitting the beach.”

Avid surfer Mark has journeyed from his home in frigid Maine to Santa Cruz for the past five winters. “The waves here are just so fun and consistent,” he said. “And being able to surf for hours wearing just boardshorts and a hoodie while my friends are bundled up back east never gets old.”

Beyond surfing, Mark also enjoys wandering downtown Santa Cruz and its famous boardwalk, mountain biking among the redwoods, and watching the sunset over the Pacific with takeout fish tacos in hand.
Farther up the coast, San Francisco can get downright chilly in winter. But hearty locals embrace the conditions. “I just wear layers and get out there,” said lifetime SF resident Amanda. “Golden Gate Park on a sunny winter day is absolute magic. And watching the surfers at Ocean Beach with hot cocoa in hand is the best.”

For Amanda, the moody fog and whip of the winds only add to the city’s intoxicating vibe. “Summer is for tourists - I love San Francisco in the winter,” she stated. “As long as the sun peeks through, I find beauty in the gray skies and drama of the seasons here.”

Chasing Sunshine: The Best Destinations for Soaking Up Vitamin D All Year Round - Mexico's Sunny Resorts Beckon Winter-Weary Travelers

As frigid temps descend across North America, Mexico's sunny resort towns offer a warm winter escape just a short flight away. From hip hotspots like Tulum to low-key beach towns on the Pacific coast, you'll find temps in the 70s and 80s and endless sunshine perfect for recharging your vitamin D stores this winter.

"I was so over the gloomy Chicago winter, so I spontaneously booked a long weekend getaway to Puerto Vallarta," explained Amy. "Stepping off the plane to temps in the 80s and sunny blue skies was like entering a different world. I spent my days lounging at the beach under a palapa sipping margaritas to the sound of the waves."

Beyond relaxing at seaside resorts, Amy also enjoyed strolling Puerto Vallarta's lively Malecón boardwalk, checking out the outdoor art installations and stopping for traditional Mexican snacks like tostadas at the many food carts. She took a day trip to the Marietas Islands, where she swam in the islands' hidden beach, accessible only by swimming through a cave.

Over on Mexico's Caribbean coast, Tulum has become a prime destination for soaking up sunshine and beach vibes. "I loved staying in a thatched roof cabana just steps from the beach in Tulum and waking up to the sunrise over the Caribbean," described Julia. "The beachfront cenotes were also amazing for cooling off with a swim in crystal clear freshwater pools after sunbathing all morning."

When not relaxing under a palm frond shade structure on the sugar-sand beach, Julia explored Tulum's mix of Mayan ruins, eclectic art galleries, and trendy restaurants focused on farm-to-table cuisine. She took side trips to discover more of the Riviera Maya's incredible cenotes, stopping for a dip to marvel at these unique water-filled sinkholes dotted with lush vegetation.
Ryan and his wife escaped the endless rain in Vancouver for some sunshine in laid-back Sayulita on Mexico's Pacific coast. "It was like our own private paradise - relaxing on the beach all day, strolling around town, and eating fresh seafood every night while my friends back home dealt with freezing temps."

Besides swimming, surfing, and beachcombing, the couple enjoyed practicing their beginner-level Spanish with the friendly locals. They also explored the cobblestoned streets of Old Town Sayulita, popping into colorful boutiques and cafes.

"The highlight was an epic daytrip into the Sierra Madre mountains to hike to the Marietas Islands Viewpoint and check out the Marietas Islands from above," Ryan said. "The endless ocean and mountain views were incredible. It was a nice change of pace from beach life."
