The new high-speed train line between Madrid and Barcelona has cut travel time between Spain's two largest cities in half. What used to be a 6 hour journey can now be completed in just 2 hours and 30 minutes. This is a game-changer for travel within Spain.

The train, called the AVE, travels at speeds up to 180 mph. It whisks passengers from city center to city center much faster than flying when you factor in getting to and from airports. The downtown train stations allow you to avoid the hassle of airports altogether.

I took the AVE recently and was amazed by how quick and easy it was. The train left Madrid on time and before I knew it we were arriving into Barcelona. The ride was smooth and quiet, nothing like the noisy inter-city trains I've experienced in other countries.

The scenery along the route blew me away. As we raced out of Madrid we passed small towns with red tiled roofs nestled amongst rolling hills dotted with olive groves. Further along, the train followed a river lined with dense forests of pine trees. As we got closer to Barcelona, we crossed over modern bridges and caught glimpses of the Mediterranean Sea sparkling in the distance.

The AVE has comfortable reclining seats with loads of legroom. There's complimentary Wi-Fi onboard so I was able to get work done during the trip. Power outlets at every seat also allowed me to charge my devices. Snacks and beverages are offered free of charge by friendly attendants.

With the new high-speed connection, Barcelona and Madrid feel closer than ever before. It opens up easy weekend getaway possibilities that weren't realistic when the trip took 6 hours each way. The AVE provides a great way for visitors to Spain to incorporate both Madrid and Barcelona into a vacation.

Locals are also benefitting from the new route. Many chose to live in one city and work in the other to take advantage of economic opportunities or lower housing costs. Now their commutes are much shorter allowing them to spend less time traveling and more time with family.

For the best fares on the AVE, book tickets in advance online directly through Renfe, the Spanish national train operator. Promotional tickets are often available starting as low as €25 each way. Once the train is fully booked regular fares apply which can be €60 or more for a one-way journey.
