Hampi is a surreal landscape dotted with magnificent temple ruins that transport you back in time. As the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th century, Hampi was one of the richest and largest cities around. The exquisite temples constructed here showcase the empire's power and wealth through their elaborate design.

When exploring Hampi, one of the highlights is taking in the intricate stone carvings found throughout the ruins. The carvings demonstrate incredible craftsmanship and artistry, reflecting the prosperity of the Vijayanagara Empire. At the Virupaksha Temple, the nine-story gopuram (tower) entrance is covered in elaborate carvings depicting gods, goddesses, mythical beasts and scenes from Hindu epics. The level of detail in these carvings is mind-blowing, with some friezes containing over 100 miniature figures!

The Vitthala Temple complex contains even more stunning stonework, including musical pillars that "sing" when tapped. Each pillar is carved from a single granite block and produces a different musical note. The stone chariot in the courtyard is another masterpiece, with stone wheels that can freely rotate. In the nearby Hazara Rama Temple, the exterior walls are carved with beautiful friezes narrating the epic Ramayana story.

At the sprawling Royal Center, the elephant stables, audience hall and temples contain exquisite carvings and desings. The Lotus Mahal palace is a highlight, with Islamic-inspired arched windows and doorways blended with Hindu motifs. Geometric patterns, flowers, mythical creatures and deities decorate the exterior in sandstone.

In the ancient bazaar area, carved temple remnants poke out between the boulders and stones. At the riverside ruins, the carved shrines and temple platforms have endured, showcasing the empire's former glory. The remains give you a glimpse into Hampi's past before the city was attacked and destroyed.
