Beyond Braveheart: Uncovering the Secret Scottish History Behind Disney Classics - The Real Macbeth Behind the Evil Villain

Most people know Macbeth as the power-hungry, murderous villain in Shakespeare's tragic play. However, the real historical Macbeth was a much more complex figure. He was king of Scots in the 11th century and his reign provides insights into medieval Scottish politics and culture that influenced how he was later portrayed.

Far from the evil tyrant depicted by Shakespeare, the real Macbeth was apparently a capable and even popular king according to some contemporary accounts. He likely took the throne by killing King Duncan, but this would not have been seen as immoral or unusual at the time. Violence and bloodshed were common methods of gaining power in 11th century Scotland.

Macbeth seems to have brought a degree of peace and prosperity to Scotland during his 17 year reign. He went on pilgrimage to Rome which was considered a pious act for medieval kings. He also likely patronized Scottish poets and artists. The real Macbeth was most likely an ambitious ruler but by no means a cruel despot.

So how did Macbeth acquire such a villainous reputation? Politics played a role. The king who eventually overthrew Macbeth, Malcolm III, wanted to slander his predecessor’s name. So poets supported by Malcolm began portraying Macbeth as a brutal, illegitimate ruler.

These early medieval myths and legends would go on to directly inspire Shakespeare’s play hundreds of years later. But Shakespeare clearly aimed to craft an exciting, dramatic tragedy. He was not concerned with portraying the real Macbeth or the complicated politics of 11th century Scotland.
