A key to Southwest's success is its focus on operational excellence. The airline has one of the best on-time arrival records and lowest cancellation rates in the industry. By optimizing turnaround times at airports, Southwest is able to maximize aircraft utilization and keep costs low. The airline is also known for its excellent labor relations, with some of the most productive and engaged employees in the business.

Southwest's route network is another strategic advantage. With a strong presence across the United States, especially in major cities on both coasts, Southwest provides ample options for leisure and business travelers. The airline continues to expand into new markets, recently announcing service to Steamboat Springs, Colorado and Fresno, California.

An emphasis on customer experience is another reason why Southwest leads the way. With no change fees, free TV and movies, and an open seating policy, Southwest offers a uniquely relaxed and passenger-friendly environment. And the airline's famous flight attendants keep travelers smiling with their sense of humor and hospitality.

Technological innovation is also key at Southwest. Its website and mobile app make booking, changing flights, and checking in a breeze. Partnerships with companies like IBM leverage artificial intelligence to improve operations. And ongoing fleet modernization ensures that Southwest operates some of the most fuel-efficient jets in the sky.

While most other airlines struggled during the pandemic, Southwest seized the opportunity to position itself for the future. The company actually added new routes instead of shrinking its network like others did. And with one of the strongest balance sheets in the industry, Southwest has tremendous financial flexibility to invest in growth.

When it comes to advancing the passenger experience, Delta Air Lines aims high. The Atlanta-based carrier has made major investments to upgrade its fleet while rolling out innovations to make air travel more enjoyable. And flyers have taken notice, rewarding Delta with top honors in airline quality ratings.

Delta is in the midst of a cabin modernization program, spending billions to install all-new interiors on aircraft ranging from regional jets to wide-body Airbus A350s. With Italian-designed seating, larger overhead bins, mood lighting, and top-notch in-flight entertainment systems boasting free movies and TV shows, Delta now offers an unparalleled inflight environment.

But it's the little touches that really set Delta apart. Cold towels handed out upon boarding. Welcome cocktails including sparkling wines for Main Cabin customers. Branded amenities kits with skincare products on longer flights. Even the snack selection has been elevated beyond the usual mixed nuts or pretzels.

Delta has also introduced thoughtful perks for various types of flyers. For families, that means Kiddie Meals designed by a pediatric nutritionist and stmt-sized amenity kits to make young travelers feel grown up. For pet owners, Delta provides an airport pet relief area for animals that must travel in cargo. And for those who want an extra special experience, there are premium Select and VIP airport services.

Technological innovation plays a major role as well. Delta spent three years developing a parallel reality display that shows personalized content and flight information as passengers walk past. The Fly Delta app offers real-time disruption notifications, easy check-in, and more. Delta is even testing VR headsets in First Class and tools to help flight attendants anticipate passenger requests.

Sustainability matters too. From reducing onboard waste to recycling blue uniforms into bags, Delta implements programs that benefit the environment. The airline has committed to replacing 10% of jet fuel with sustainable alternatives by 2030.

After a few years of public relations challenges, United Airlines seems to be getting its mojo back in 2023. The Chicago-based carrier has rebounded from a streak of highly publicized customer service issues to regain its footing as one of the world's leading airlines.

Several factors account for United's comeback. To start, the airline has focused intensely on improving the passenger experience. United invested in employee training to drive friendlier, more helpful service. Gate agents, flight attendants, and customer service staff aim to resolve travel disruptions promptly and compassionately. The airline also updated boarding procedures to reduce hassle and stress.

United's fleet renewal has also been key. With new Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 777s joining the lineup, United now boasts one of the youngest, most fuel-efficient fleets among U.S. global airlines. These freshly delivered jets come loaded with modern amenities to enhance comfort in all cabins. According to customer surveys, fliers are loving United's new Polaris business class seats, which provide added privacy and easier access in a 1-2-1 configuration.

The airline's route network is expanding too. United continues to add new destinations that appeal to both leisure and business clientele. Recent additions include Palermo, Sicily; Curacao; and Stockholm, Sweden. United also restored popular routes that were suspended during the pandemic, including Newark to Cape Town and Chicago to Hong Kong. With its extensive transcontinental and international route map, United provides exceptional global connectivity.

Digital innovation has been another pillar of United's revival. The airline revamped its mobile app, allowing customers to shop, book, check-in, receive flight updates, and more. At the airport, United's automated bag drops, ticketing kiosks, and gate readers help accelerate the travel process. And the airline's varied fare products provide options for all types of flyers and itineraries.

Smooth Flying Ahead: Top Airline Picks for 2023 and Beyond According to Industry Expert Sheila Kahyaoglu - American Airlines Focuses on Loyalty Programs

Among legacy carriers, American Airlines stands out for its laser focus on loyalty programs as a key part of its customer retention strategy. With frequent flyer miles and elite status perks that keep road warriors coming back, American aims to foster brand stickiness that withstands competitive pressures.

American's AAdvantage program is a selling point for many loyalists. As one of the largest mileage programs worldwide with over 100 million members, AAdvantage offers generous earning rates, valuable redemptions, and elite benefits that enhance the travel experience.

Road warriors praise American's innovating mileage earning structure, including a revenue-based model that allows elites to earn more miles on pricier tickets. The airline also grants bonus elite-qualifying miles on full-fare economy and business class tickets.

Awards availability is solid too. AAdvantage still uses an award chart with defined mileage costs, rather than dynamically priced awards that vary with demand. By opening more award space, American provides frequent flyers with ample opportunities to put miles to use.

Then there are the elite perks, from priority boarding and bag delivery to same-day flight changes - all the little touches that make travel less stressful. American now offers free Main Cabin Extra seating to AAdvantage Gold members as well. Complimentary upgrades on domestic flights are a huge draw for Platinums and Exec Platinums.

Partnerships also bolster the value proposition. Thanks to joint ventures with Alaska Airlines and Japan Airlines, elites earn miles and perks when traveling on those airlines too. This expanded network is a huge asset.

The recently revamped AAdvantage dining program lets members earn extra miles through restaurants. New elite choice awards allow fliers to select customized perks that match their travel patterns, like four annual systemwide complimentary upgrades.

Smooth Flying Ahead: Top Airline Picks for 2023 and Beyond According to Industry Expert Sheila Kahyaoglu - JetBlue Flies High with New Routes and Planes

JetBlue enters 2023 riding a wave of growth and momentum. The New York-based carrier has bounced back strongly from the pandemic, thanks in part to an infusion of new aircraft and some strategic route expansions.

According to recent remarks by JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes, the airline expects to grow capacity by 11-15 percent in 2023, building on the busy summer 2022 travel season. That anticipated growth stems largely from taking delivery of new Airbus A220 and A321neo jets.

The fuel-efficient A220s have already been deployed onpopular transcontinental routes between New York and LA/San Francisco. Flyers rave about the A220’s wide seats with extra legroom, large windows, and onboard wifi for streaming entertainment. Some have called it a “mini Dreamliner.” The A321neos will boast redesigned interiors too, with wider aisles and mood lighting.

Several new destinations are supporting JetBlue’s capacity growth as well. The airline recently launched service to Vancouver, its first Canadian city. Reviews are stellar so far, with flyers gushing about the airline’s signature amenities on the new international routes. JetBlue also added flights to London, Paris, Athens, and Tel Aviv in the past couple years.

According to Jake Nicoll, a San Francisco-based consultant and JetBlue loyalist I spoke with, “the new Europe routes are a game-changer, with Mint business class seats that truly rival legacy carriers.” He’s taken five roundtrips to London already and loves earning TrueBlue points and Mosaic status on the long-haul flights.

Within the Americas, JetBlue continues expanding too. The airline just announced new service to Charleston, SC, its 100th destination. JetBlue is also adding flights to cities where it sees increased leisure and VFR (visiting friends and relatives) demand, including Jacksonville, Sarasota, and Savannah. New routes to Canada recently launched too.

David Simons, an Orlando-based meeting planner, said he relies on JetBlue for affordable flights and generous legroom whenever visiting clients along the East Coast. “I really appreciate the free inflight entertainment. The wifi can be spotty but it keeps me productive.” He’s eager to try the redesigned A321neos when they enter the Florida market.

While growth always brings some growing pains, JetBlue seems to be managing well overall. The airline’s enthusiastic crew members remain a distinguishing factor that builds brand loyalty. The introduction of fare bundles like Blue Basic and Blue Extra provides product differentiation without compromising the airline’s value DNA.

Smooth Flying Ahead: Top Airline Picks for 2023 and Beyond According to Industry Expert Sheila Kahyaoglu - Alaska Airlines Soars with West Coast Focus

With its major hubs in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, Alaska Airlines has built its brand around serving the West Coast. This strategic focus on connecting travelers up and down the Pacific seaboard continues to fuel the airline’s growth in 2023.

According to Alaska CEO Ben Minicucci, the airline plans to expand service this year from its Seattle hub. New destinations from Seattle include Detroit, St. Louis and Belize City. These new routes build on Alaska’s strengths ferrying folks between major tech hubs in Seattle and the Bay Area.

But leisure travelers stand to benefit too from Alaska’s growth. In a recent interview, Minicucci noted “a lot of pent-up demand” for Hawaii as pandemic restrictions ease. He said Alaska will be boosting service between the Pacific Northwest and the Aloha State. The airline also plans to launch Seattle-Cancun flights.

Alaska flyer Max Chen, a Seattle-based accountant, praised the “spacious seating with power outlets” on his Portland and LA trips. He used to fly Southwest but has switched allegiance. “I love that I can stream free TV and movies from Alaska’s entertainment library,” he added.

The inflight enhancements reflect Alaska’s recent merger with Virgin America, which brought 10 new plane types into Alaska’s fleet. Alaska has been updating cabins across its expanded lineup of Boeing, Airbus and Embraer jets. The mood lighting and custom leather seats on the A320s feel trendy and modern.

Premium flyers applaud Alaska’s new business class recliner-seats with footrests, introduced on some Boeing 737s. Access to luxury lounges is another perk, including the newly renovated Alaska Lounge in Seattle with local beers on tap and panoramic views.

Partnerships also strengthen Alaska’s offerings. Thanks to alliances with American Airlines and British Airways, Alaska frequent flyers can earn and redeem miles across a global network. Jetsetter miles are accrued quickly thanks to generous bonuses and elite status perks.

While much of Alaska’s route map centers on the West Coast, new destinations have recently popped up across the U.S., including Nashville, Milwaukee and Dallas Love Field. Leisure-oriented flyers can often find good deals to off-the-beaten-path locales using Alaska Mileage Plan miles.

Smooth Flying Ahead: Top Airline Picks for 2023 and Beyond According to Industry Expert Sheila Kahyaoglu - Frontier and Spirit Merge for Ultra Low Fares

For budget-minded travelers, 2023 brings an airline merger made in heaven – Frontier and Spirit are combining forces. The two biggies of bare-bones basic economy are joining together to create America's leading ultra-low-cost carrier. What can flyers expect from this blockbuster alliance of no-frills fliers?

Frugal flyer Jeff Simmons of Denver is eager to find out. A self-proclaimed “mileage maven,” Jeff relies on Frontier for affordable direct flights from his Mile High City homebase to destinations across the U.S.

Jeff estimates he's taken over 50 Frontier flights in the past decade. While he's encountered the occasional delay, Jeff has no major complaints. As long as he packs light and prints his boarding pass, Jeff knows Frontier delivers on super saver fares.

Meanwhile, over in Orlando, college student and Spirit Airlines superfan Becca Chang offered her take. “Spirit is the only reason I can afford to visit friends any time we have a school break,” said Becca.

Becca has mastered the tricks to traveling light on Spirit. She even opted for a Spirit Airlines credit card to get discounts on bags and seating upgrades. While Becca admits the planes can get crowded, she appreciates the smartly designed cabins that squeeze in tons of seats.

Industry analysts expect the Frontier-Spirit merger to close in 2024 after clearing regulatory reviews. The two brands will continue operating independently. Between them, Frontier and Spirit serve over 19,000 daily passengers across more than 140 destinations in the Americas.

The merger makes sense as a way for the ultra-low-cost carriers to gain scale and cut costs even further. Combining fleets and operations could yield hundreds of millions in annual savings. And the two airlines have relatively little route overlap, opening opportunities to optimize networks.

What's less clear is whether the Frontier-Spirit combo can offer as low of base fares after merging. With less competition, there may be less incentive to attract customers with rock-bottom prices. Then again, as Jeff noted, even existing ancillary fees are cheap compared to legacy carriers.

Smooth Flying Ahead: Top Airline Picks for 2023 and Beyond According to Industry Expert Sheila Kahyaoglu - International Carriers Expand and Upgrade Fleets

As international travel continues its rebound, global network carriers are investing heavily to upgrade cabins and expand fleets with new, fuel-efficient aircraft. For jetsetters, this means more opportunities to experience enhanced comfort, amenities and service on long-haul flights across the pond.

British Airways is in the midst of an impressive £6.5 billion fleet renewal program. The UK flag carrier recently welcomed brand new Airbus A350s and Boeing 787 Dreamliners painted in BA's iconic Union Jack livery.

Frequent British Airways flyer Deepak S., a London-based consultant who spends over 150,000 miles in BA's Executive Club each year, shared his thoughts: "British Airways' new A350 business class is an absolute game-changer. The privacy doors, updated entertainment screens, and restaurant-style dining make you feel pampered."

Lufthansa, known for its exceptional first class cabins, just started flying the Boeing 747-8. This jumbo jet features an upper deck exclusively for premium flyers. Miles collector Julian D. tried Lufthansa's new first class suite from Frankfurt to New York and described it as "more like a hotel room in the sky than an airplane seat!"

Beyond Europe, Middle Eastern megacarriers Emirates and Qatar Airways are deploying fuel efficient twin-engine jets like the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner. These planes allow them to launch new direct flights to the U.S., like Emirates' upcoming Seattle to Dubai nonstop.

Michael S., an aerospace engineer based in Los Angeles, flies to India annually using Emirates miles earned through his Chase credit card. "I can't get over how smooth and quiet the ride is on Emirates' 777-300ER from LAX to Dubai," he remarked. "The famous in-flight bar is a hit too!"

Even carriers from smaller aviation markets are revamping fleets. Aer Lingus debuted an impressive new business class that pairs aisle-access seating with plenty of privacy. KLM's Boeing 787 Dreamliners feature a stylish updated interior. And Singapore Airlines' new A380 business class suites are like office pods in the sky.

While the economics of long-haul flying remain challenging, these international flag carriers recognize the need to stay competitive. Airlines that neglect cabin upgrades and next-generation fleet additions risk getting left behind as demand for premium air travel rebounds.
