After a painfully dry start to the season, California ski resorts are rejoicing as the Sierras have finally been blanketed with fresh powder. A series of winter storms over the past couple weeks have dumped several feet of snow across the region's peaks, transforming bare slopes into winter wonderlands.

For skiers and snowboarders, this new snow means untracked powder runs and soft bumps to carve. Resorts like Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows reported receiving over 5 feet of snow in just a week. With all this new snow, skiers are rushing to take advantage and enjoy knee-deep powder days.

Locals who feared a repeat of last season's dismally dry conditions are breathing a sigh of relief. While a good base of snow doesn't guarantee the rest of the season will be wet, it's a very promising start. After years of drought, these storms help replenish the snowpack that supplies water to California communities throughout the year.

The snow has been a boon for resorts, allowing them to open new terrain that was previously inaccessible. Northstar California opened several new runs after getting over 4 feet of snow recently. Nearby Sugar Bowl also opened several lifts to access its extensive expert terrain. With more slopes open, resorts hope to attract skiers who may have written off the season after the warm early winter.

For die-hard skiers, a dump of snow means chasing powder turns down steep chutes and in the trees. Locals flock to renowned off-piste zones like Squaw Valley's Fingers when the snow is deep. Visibility can be tough in heavy snow, so experts advise packing a beacon, probe and shovel when venturing into avalanche terrain.

While the new snow is mostly a cause for celebration, it also brings challenges.Routes to resorts like Kirkwood and Heavenly were periodically shut down due to avalanche control and hazardous conditions. Drivers should carry chains and allow extra time when heading to the mountains after a big storm.

After the lifting of COVID restrictions, resorts were hoping for a rebound year. While the crowds have been smaller than expected so far, new snow could draw more skiers and snowboarders. Resorts are enticing visitors with lodging deals and discounted lift tickets now that conditions are prime.
