Tokyo is a sprawling metropolis with over twenty unique districts, each with its own distinct flavor and character. While it’s tempting to stick to the well-trodden tourist circuit of Asakusa, Shibuya, and Shinjuku, you’ll miss out on experiencing the real Tokyo if you don’t venture into its lesser-known neighborhoods.

Start by exploring Shimokitazawa, Tokyo’s bohemian capital. Nestled away from the frenetic city center, this trendy neighborhood bursts with quirky cafes, live music venues, funky boutiques, and street art. Meander the narrow lanes lined with independent shops and soak up the artsy atmosphere. Stop for a break at one of Shimokitazawa’s many cozy cafes, the perfect spot for people-watching.

For a taste of old world Tokyo, head to Yanaka near Ueno Park. Known as Tokyo’s shitamachi (old downtown), Yanaka has managed to retain its traditional roots despite the city’s relentless modernization. Wooden machiya townhouses with sliding doors and cobblestone lanes transport you back to a bygone era. The nostalgic neighborhood is home to art galleries, temples, craft shops and street stalls selling snacks like dango and taiyaki.

Foodies flock to suburban Kichijoji to explore its famed covered shopping arcade known as Sun Road. The atmospheric shotengai is lined with mom-and-pop shops selling Japanese street food, from piping hot takoyaki to fluffy souffle pancakes. Kichijoji also boasts Inokashira Park, a prime hanami (cherry blossom viewing) spot.

To experience Tokyo’s manga culture, make a beeline for Nakano Broadway. This complex houses specialty shops catering to anime, manga, gaming and idol fans. Peruse endless shelves of manga, action figures, vintage toys, cosplay outfits and obscure music. An upper floor is filled with cosplay and maid cafes. After shopping, recharge over a katsu sandwich and melon soda.
