Lufthansa has announced a big cut back to the flight program for the entire Lufthansa Group. The executive board decided to reduce capacity by up to 50% in the next few weeks because of the coronavirus epidemic.

Lufthansa Group Reducing Capacity By Up To 50%
The Lufthansa Group has announced plans to cut capacity by up to half due to a big decline in bookings and cancellations caused by the coronavirus epidemic. Lufthansa is also considering grounding its entire fleet of Airbus A380 aircraft at Frankfurt and Munich airports. With these cutbacks, Lufthansa aims to minimize the financial consequences caused by the decline in ticket sales. This will probably affect all Lufthansa Group airlines, which includes Austrian, Brussels, Lufthansa, and SWISS. Lufthansa Group has already stopped hiring new employees. They are also asking existing employees to take unpaid leave or move up their vacation days. They announced another press release that will be held on March 19, 2020, where they will financial figures and give some more information regarding these cutbacks.

Due to the exceptional circumstances caused by the spread of Covid-19 and the resulting drastic decline in bookings as well as numerous flight cancellations Lufthansa Group decided to reduce the flight capacity on offer even more than previously planned. Depending on the further development of demand, capacity is to be reduced by up to 50 per cent in the coming weeks. These capacity adjustments apply to all passenger airlines in the Lufthansa Group.
Northern Italy in Lockdown
The Italian government announced today, on March 8, 2020, that they will be taking measures to contain the coronavirus epidemic. Northern Italy has been placed in quarantine until April 2020. What that means is that there will be no travel allowed to or out of the quarantined areas, no public gatherings, sports events, etc. Also, most public places, like schools, and shopping malls will be closed.
The quarantine will include the following regions:
- Lombardy region – entire region, all provinces
- Piedmont – provinces of Alessandria, Asti, Novara, Verbano Cusio Ossola, and Vercelli
- Veneto – provinces of Padua, Treviso, and Venice
- Emilia Romagna – provinces of Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia, and Rimini
- Marche – province of Pesaro Urbino
