American Airlines just announced that they’ll be waiving change fees for travel purchased between March 1 and 16, 2020. They are the latest airline that is offering waivers for tickets, following JetBlue and Alaska Airlines.

American Airlines suspended all operations to mainland China
The first step American Airlines took was to cut back on their 28 weekly flights to mainland China. They suspended flights from LAX to Shanghai and Beijing between February 9 and March 27. Afterward, American Airlines announced that they’re suspending all operations to and from mainland China until March 27, 2020.
American Airlines Change Fee Waiver
American Airlines will waive change fees on any tickets purchased between March 1 and March 16. Passengers who purchase tickets in this period will be required to make changes 14 days prior to their travel dates. What this fee waiver means is that if you book an American Airlines fare between the given dates and decide to cancel the trip 14 or more days in advance you’ll receive travel credit equal to the total value of your booking.

Book a new trip March 1 – March 16, 2020, and there is no change fee if your travel plans change. Changes must be made 14 days before your original departure date and other terms apply.
- American Airlines will waive the change fee only for tickets purchased between March 1, 2020, and March 16, 2020, with original travel between March 1, 2020, and January 26, 2021
- You should change your ticket at least 14 days prior to the departure of your original flight
- New travel should be completed within one year of original ticket issue date
- This waiver applies to all fares
- Any difference in fare will apply
- You can change your trip online or by calling Reservations

American Airlines also says it will waive change fees for certain tickets bought to regions affected by the coronavirus. That includes Italy, parts of China, South Korea, and Italy.
