Uber has become the go-to ride service for many travelers in the last several years. The ability to quickly request a ride from a mobile device has made navigating cities across the world so much easier.
With so many miles and points enthusiasts taking Uber rides all over the world, we wanted to review how to use the most out of the platform. You can earn miles and points which help you book your next award flight or hotel award stay.

Uber Rewards Program

Using Uber’s reward program is completely free. There are four categories of Uber Rewards: Blue, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. Uber Rewards elite status is earned in 6-month qualifying periods. Your first qualifying period starts when you join Uber Rewards. You have 6 months from that date to earn elite status. Elite status, once earned, is good for the remainder of your elite qualifying period, plus 6 months.

  • Blue – base member level
  • Gold – 500 points
  • Platinum – 2,500 points
  • Diamond – 7,500 points

What that means is you will need 500 points to advance from Blue to Gold, 2,500 points to advance to Platinum, and 7,500 points to advance to Diamond.

Blue Elite status

Blue Elite status of Uber’s rewards program offers no elite benefits, it is a stepping stone towards gold status.

Gold Elite status

Gold Elite status offers no fee cancels if you rebook another Uber within 15 minutes of cancel. This can generally save around $5 cancel fee. Also, UberPool is excluded from this offer. You will also receive priority support.

Platinum Elite status

Platinum Elite status will allow you to cut to the front of line priority at many airports. This status also offers a price lock on one route, chosen monthly.

Diamond Elite status

The top of the Uber Rewards program, this status offers upgrades from UberX, phone support when needed, UberEats delivery fee waiver for 3 orders every 6 months and DiamondX setting in-app to limit to highly-rated drivers.
So, how do you earn the points?

  • 1 point per dollar on UberPool and UberEats
  • 2 points per dollar on UberX, Uber XL, Select, and WAV
  • 3 points per dollar on UberBlack, Black SUV, and Lux

Every 500 points earned are converted to a $5 Uber Cash credit placed in your account.

“We wanted to develop benefits that hopefully resonated with users,” Nundu Janakiram, director of product of riders said in a press statement.

Uber Visa Card

The Uber Visa Card is a cash back card with several popular bonus categories like a 4% cash-back on dining including restaurants, bars, and UberEATS, 3% cash-back on airfare and hotels, 2% cash-back on online purchases, including Uber plus video and music streaming services such as Spotify and Pandora, 1% cash-back on all other purchases.
This card has no annual fee. The points you earn function as cash-back and can be redeemed for Uber rides, gift cards, or statement credits. Each point is worth 1 cent.

Uber says its rewards program should be seen as an investment in its customers.

“We think its a relationship-oriented investment,” Holly Ormseth, product lead for Uber Rewards.

Earn Miles and hotel awards with Uber

Two international hotel chains that have paired their loyalty programs with Uber are Starwood Hotels and Resorts and InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG).

Starwood Hotels and Resorts Guest loyalty program

Members receive one point per dollar spent through Uber at any given time and receive even more points when using Uber during a Starwood Hotel stay. Every Uber Rewards program user is eligible for these rewards regardless of their status. However, the points earned during a hotel stay increase depending on your status.

IHG Rewards Club

Points can only be earned when first signing up for Uber. First-time users receive a free ride up and earn a bonus 2,000 IHG Rewards Club points once they ride.
