American plane on fire in Hong Kong, SF Bay Area under fire siege today, Turkey suspends issuing visas for US citizens

– an American Airlines plane in Hong Kong was briefly engulfed in a fire as a cargo loading equipment caught fire earlier today

One injury is reported but the plane and passengers were amazingly not harmed.

– I woke up to the smell of fire this morning – there are several huge fires raging just north of me around Napa and Sonoma

Most major traffic arteries north of San Francisco are shut down. Napa and Santa Rosa airports are closed and the haze is affecting air quality enormously in the area with SFO and OAK delays likely.

More than 1,000 have been evacuated and the dry conditions in the Bay Area (that’s quite normal at this of the year) will likely give the fire room to burn for at least several more hours.

– Turkey has stopped issuing non-immigrant visas to US passport holders over the weekend in a tit-for-tat move after the US announced the same move last week

While I expect this to be resolved rather soon Turkey ran a similar policy with its former (and new) ally Russia. If you have a visa issued you are good to go but it may tale a while to get any new visa approvals.

If you have a trip to Turkey planned or a longer layover you may be affected. The same is true if you hold a Turkish passport and have travel to the US planned.

If you are just connecting in Turkey without leaving the airport you should be fine (the same is not true for Turkish passengers connecting in the US).

While known to be chaotic at re-bookings Turkish Airlines has made an announcement on their website that seems more customer friendly than usual.
