bonus Mileage Plan

What’s the deal with the bonus Mileage Plan miles?

‘It’s raining bonus miles’ when you purchase Mileage Plan miles through July 1st, 2017 –  especially if you have been targeted by email for a higher amount! The new Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan promotion is advertised as offering up to a 40% bonus, but targeted readers report being awarded up to 50% instead:

  • Buy between 10,000 and 19,000 miles to get a 20% bonus
  • Purchase between 20,000 and 49,000 miles to get a 35% bonus
  • Buy between 50,000 and 60,000 miles to get a 50% bonus

If you buy the maximum 60,000 miles and get a 50% bonus, it’ll cost $1,773.75 total for 90,000 miles, so just under 2 cents each.

Those not targeted for the higher bonus can still currently purchase miles to receive a bonus of up to 40%:

  • Buy between 10,000 and 19,000 miles to get a 20% bonus
  • Purchase between 20,000 and 49,000 miles to get a 30% bonus
  • Buy between 50,000 and 60,000 miles to get a 40% bonus

If you buy the maximum 60,000 miles and get a 40% bonus, it’ll cost $1,773.75 total for 84,000 miles, so 2.1 cents each.

Is it worth it to buy Mileage Plan miles with this deal?

We saw a similar Mileage Plan deal a year ago. If you are targeted for the 50% bonus, or even if not and wan the 40% bonus, then it may well be a good idea to grab this deal, especially if you need a certain number of miles for an Emirates or Cathay Pacific redemption and if you purchase the maximum amount of miles.

However, it’s quite often the case that it’s only really worth buying or gifting points when they are needed, rather than buying speculatively.
