The Holiday Inn Express Hong Kong Mongkok is a brand new building located in Mongkok (a neighborhood I just discovered on my last visit). The area is a less crowded, untouristy version of Kowloon, on partially reclaimed land on the western side of Hong Kong.
If you have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express in Asia, you won’t have trouble recognizing the familiar style and colors here. I actually like that and enjoyed my stays earlier this year at the Holiday Inn Express in Surabaya and the one in Bali a lot.
Check-in was easy but had all the bureaucratic hurdles of many check-ins in Asia. Rates were around $100, which I found to be great value, and the hotel WiFi is complimentary and fast.
The rooms here are much bigger than your usual Hong Kong space; they were downright spacious and still had that ‘new equipment feel’ to it. The shower was large and the bathroom was modern as well.
Now I comment on how soft mattresses are everywhere I stay and this hotel is likely the only one where I found it too hard – in fact there is no resilience of the mattress at all. I usually prefer that a lot, but I wasn’t so sure about this one.
Breakfast in the morning was surprisingly nice, with a number of items to choose from which were ready-made in the kitchen and served on a tray. While I usually skip breakfast in a Holiday Inn in the US, the items were pretty good, easily on the same level of a business class flight.
All in all, I really liked the hotel. It was spacious, had the right price and everything worked just perfectly. Now this is no hotel to show off to your peers about, but it’s a great, quiet place for a few days in Hong Kong.
