Colombia’s Barranquilla seems to be in a building boom and a number of hotel brands have made their appearance in the city lately. The Hampton by Hilton is in Barranquilla’s second best neighborhood and just blocks from a Park Inn, a Wyndham Garden and a Four Points by Sheraton.
This Hilton hotel is part of a new development that houses a number of offices and also a popular Juan Valdez coffee shop downstairs. It reminded me a lot of the DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur, just with less perks.
Check-in was very friendly and in fluent English. The front desk agent was very knowledgeable and able to help is with all our questions, As Hilton Diamond, your benefits at this property are… exactly nothing!
We had booked two rooms per night and we got them with a connecting door which made it look like a full suite (though with somewhat awkward doors). The rooms were small, but very functional and brand new and the beds had comfortable (read hard) mattresses.
The best thing about my room was the bathroom, which was in superb shape, with a great shower that had perfect pressure and temperature.
The AC was equally perfect; just set the desired temperature and you could forget about it, as it would quietly show up. Also the internet worked fast at 4MBit, never disconnected and ping times were very short, so it actually felt much faster.
Also, the room had great soundproofing, so it felt a world away from the busy road and the heart-wrenching heat outside.
Unfortunately, though, breakfast was just terrible. On just one of the days I found a croissant-like food item, which was decent, but none of the other items are something that should be eaten – ever.
The good news is that the adjacent coffee shop, which almost looks like it is inside the hotel, is a comfy Juan Valdez. If you know SF Bay Area coffee, it’s like a Peet’s – better than Starbucks, but not as great as a ‘third wave’ coffee shop.
The gym and a hot tub are both located on the rooftop; the area looks great and the gym was well-equipped.
The staff were super-friendly and all the front desk staff were fluent in English, as per brand standard. Plus housekeeping did a great job cleaning up our mess every morning.
Around the hotel there are a number of great places to eat (you can read my Barranquilla Things to do Guide here) and it’s OK to walk anywhere at most times.
All in all, this Hampton by Hilton proved a great oasis in Barranquilla and a great base to explore this city.
