What’s the scoop on the Walmart to Walmart money transfer?
Following on from our recent Walmart MoneyGram post, we take a look at the in-store service Walmart2Walmart, which is, as its name suggests, simply where you can send money from one store to another. You can transfer cash from your local store to be collected by the recipient at one of thousands of Walmart stores all over the US as well as Puerto Rico.
You can use Walmart2Walmart in-store at your local Walmart MoneyCenter or customer service desk and pay with cash, debit card or prepaid debit card. The service is powered by Ria, which is a money transfer company that’s a subsidiary of Euronet Worldwide, Inc, which in turn is a worldwide provider of electronic payment and transaction processing solutions.
In April, 2014, Walmart2Walmart was launched by Ria with the news that it would be charging less than half that of competing companies for the new money transfer service – $4.50 for sending up to $50 or $9.50 for sending up to $900.
Two years on and those fees are still the same:
- You can send up to $50 from one Walmart to another for the flat fee of $4.50
- You can send $51 to $900 from one Walmart to another for the flat fee of $9.50
Compared with the cost of sending money online with Walmart’s MoneyGram service, this is a great saving as long you’re only sending up to $900 maximum. We checked the current cost of transferring $900 to a US Walmart store using the online service instead:
As you can see, for the 10-minute transfer when paying by credit or debit card, it costs a whopping $80.75 extra, or $11.50 extra to transfer from a checking account. With this in mind, it really does pay to use Walmart2Walmart for amounts between $51 and $900 for the low cost of just $9.50!
How do I use the Walmart to Walmart money transfer service?
Head to the MoneyCenter or customer service desk at your nearest store. You can use the handy store finder here to find stores near you as well as near to the recipient of your money transfer, whether in the US or Puerto Rico.
What else do I need to know about the Walmart to Walmart money transfer service?
Although Walmart is often positively reviewed for helping you to save money when transferring cash, it’s always worth shopping around to see if there’s a cheaper option. Even just comparing Walmart’s own online service with the one in-store can save you a pretty penny.
