United is putting their new 787 deliveries to work in San Francisco! The airline is planning to launch flights as follows:
Tel Aviv, Israel, with service three times each week beginning March 30, 2016
Auckland, New Zealand, with service three times each week beginning July 1, 2016, expanding to daily service in October;
Xi’an, China, previously announced, three-times-weekly service beginning May 8, 2016, for the summer season.
While the United 787 aren’t a masterpiece I really enjoyed my flight in the United 787 Business Class from San Francisco to Osaka earlier this year.
As usual it is a good idea to look at award availability as soon as the flight is open for booking – many flights will later show unavailable so book first and cancel later (keep the fees in mind).
The Tel Aviv and Xi’an flights will be available for booking on united.com on October 10, 2015, with the Auckland flights available for booking on October 17, 2015.
Auckland is a super high yield route for Air New Zealand and it’s time for a bit of competition (though both airlines share revenue already). Tel Aviv is a logical extension and will be welcomed by lots of Silicon Valley commuters.
Air India is also launching a direct Delhi to San Francisco route – this might have been another route United would have considered (though it’s a bit long for the 787).
