Throwback Thursday – some of my favorite trips in the last two years

I did a number of amazing trips in the last 18 months that I’m very thankful of. Here are some of my favorite destinations and mile redemptions and more importantly how you can do the same thing.

Middle East and the Seychelles

In November 2014 I used 100,000 Alaska Miles to fly back from the Seychelles with two segments in Emirates First Class (Review).

This amazing deal still exists – you can sign up for an Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® Personal Card and the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® Business Card. Both give you a 25,000 Sign-Up bonus (the annual fee is not waived).

Additionally you can transfer 30,000 Starpoints (which you can earn from the Sign Up Bonus of the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express and the required minimum spend) for another 35,000 Alaska Mileage Plan miles.

This is enough for a Business Class ticket – a First Class Ticket is 100,000 miles. I find Emirates Business Class a great deal at 75,000 miles from anywhere in Africa back to the US.

For my flight to the Seychelles from Abu Dhabi I used Etihad Guest Miles. The easiest way to earn Etihad Guest miles is through the Citi Prestige or Citi ThankYou Premier card right now.

During that same trip I also traveled to Colombo in Cathay Pacific First Class using 67,500 AAdvantage miles.

The best options to earn AAdvantage miles are the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ MasterCard® and the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® MasterCard®. Both have great sign-up bonuses.

Indonesia (Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Mt Bromo)

Also in 2014 I traveled to Indonesia and had the chance to to explore Yogyakarta (Borobudur and Prambanan as well as Mt. Bromo.

Cathay Pacific Business Class got my to Indonesia for 50,000 AAdvantage miles.

The best options to earn AAdvantage miles are the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ MasterCard® and the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® MasterCard®. Both have great sign-up bonuses.

Siberia

Earlier this year I went to Novosibirsk, Irkutsk and Lake Baikal as well as Vladivostok.

I always wanted to see Russia’s Wild East and while the cities were just ok I was blown away by the sheer space that you find in Siberia.

Flights in Russia can be expensive (though the recent Ruble devaluation has reduced that a bit). The best way to get around in Siberia is S7 (Review) using British Airways Executive Club Avios. Most redemptions are just 4,500 – 7,500 miles and there are no fuel surcharges.

A good way to earn Avios is the American Express® Premier Rewards Gold Card or The Platinum Card® from American Express.
