What’s the deal with the Southwest Companion Pass?
A Companion Pass with Southwest Airlines is a valuable travel tool that lets someone fly with you virtually for free (they just have to pay taxes and fees which start from $5.60 one-way) for an entire year. You can even have a Companion Pass for much more than a year, as when you earn it, it lasts until the end of that year and then all of the next calendar year. So if you earn the pass in January, 2016, it’s yours until the end of December, 2017!
To earn a Companion Pass, you need to either fly 100 qualifying one-ways with Southwest or earn 110,000 qualifying Rapid Rewards points in one calendar year. Right now, you can apply for two Southwest Rapid Rewards credit cards (one personal and one business card) that each earn 50,000 bonus points with a $2,000 spend (plus this spend earns you 4,000 points, meaning you’ll have 104,000 points total). This is just 6,000 points shy of the target 110,000 points needed to get the free pass.
With this current Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Premier credit card offer, you also get 6,000 bonus points after your cardmember anniversary. There are no foreign transaction fees to pay and the annual fee is $99 (not waived). You earn 2 points per dollar spent on Southwest Airlines purchases and with Rapid Rewards hotel partners, car rental partners and on point purchases and 1 point per dollar everywhere else.
If this offer has expired, apply for the card here instead.

What else do I need to know about the Southwest Companion Pass deal?
To earn the remaining 6,000 Rapid Rewards points, you could spend $6,000 across the two cards (perhaps with manufacturing spend) or shop on Southwest’s online portal, or you could even transfer points across from other programs like Choice Hotels, Club Carlson, Hyatt, Wyndham or Marriott.
