What’s Global Entry?

We wrote an introduction to Global Entry last year and decided it was time to update the information.

The Global Entry Trusted Traveler program was piloted by the US Customs and Border Protection to allow pre-approved, low-risk travelers into the US with expedited advance clearance. When you land at a select airport after you’ve flown internationally, you can use one of the special kiosks to verify your identity by inserting your passport or US permanent resident card, scanning for fingerprint verification and making your customs declaration.

What’s the Global Entry application fee?

Before applicants are accepted for Global Entry, they have to undergo a background check and an interview and need to pay a non-refundable $100 fee. Once approved, your Global Entry lasts 5 years, so at $20 per year, if you travel internationally often,  it’s not too bad on the wallet. However, some credit cards and one loyalty program in particular will actually credit you with the $100 fee or give you a voucher code to cover the cost, so it’s worth checking if you’re entitled before paying out.

United Airlines used to compensate select MileagePlus members with the fee, but that benefit disappeared this year. Delta SkyMiles Platinum Medallion members can choose a $100 Global Entry Application Voucher, while Diamond Medallion members can choose two vouchers – so you can cover the cost of another’s Global Entry as well as your own:

What else do I need to know about the Global Entry application fee?
