How to earn Citi Thank You Points?
Credit Cards – Sign Up Bonus
The biggest source for points are traditionally sign-up bonuses from Citi Thank You Points earning credit cards.
Citi Thank You Premier Card Spending
The newest version of the Thank You Premier Card gives 3X ThankYou Points for Travel and Gas purchases as well as 2X for Dining Out and Entertainment purchases. If you have lots of gas purchases for instance(i.e. you have a small business and run a fleet – this can add up quickly.
There is no cap on the bonus points earned from spending.
Citi also has an offer for 40,000 Thank You Points for checking accounts if you open a new Citi Gold account. This offer comes and disappears every couple of months.
A Citi checking account can also earn up to 1,600 Thank You points per month.
Citi Thank You Points expire after 3 years in most cases. Some cards–like the Citi Thank You Premier and Preferred–offer points that don’t expire as long as you actively earn or redeem rewards every 12 months.
How to spend Citi Thank You Points?
Redeem for charges
Citibank lets you redeem Thank You Points for certain statement charges – you will get less than 1 cent per point. Don’t do it!
Redeem on Amazon.com
Amazon allows you to use Thank You points at the checkout.
Eligible Citi cards include Citi Prestige Card, all Citi ThankYou Cards, Citi Chairman American Express Card, Citi Forward Card, CitiBusiness ThankYou Card, Citi PremierPass/Expedia Card, AT&T Cards, and Sunoco cardmembers with available ThankYou Points.
This option will value your Thank You points with 1 cent or less. It is convenient but not great value.
Redeem for merchandise
Redeeming Citi Thank You Points for merchandise is a bad idea – don’t even think about it! You will gte avalue of less than one cent.
Redeem for Flights
This is my preferred option to use Thank You Points (beside the transfer option below). If you book flights you can get 1.3 cents per Thank You Points. The hard part is finding the same flights that you found somewhere else (i.e. Mighty Travels deals or on Kayak) with the Thank You Points Flight search. It is certainly possible though and I have redeem more than 50,000 points that way!
How to transfer Citi Thank You Points?
Starting July 2014 Citi Thank You Points can be transferred to 12 airlines as well as Hilton HHonors.
Here is the list of airlines I have made transferred to or plan to make transfers to:
While Etihad Guest just made some unfavorable changes there is still valuable to be had in short-haul redemptions on some of the more exotic partners like Royal Air Maroc and South African (this includes South African Airlink).
Flying Blue has many steals for short/medium haul Economy awards. The hard part is figuring out fuel surcharges for some of the partners.
Qantas is generally not a great program but it does partner with some non Oneworld airlines like Air Niugini making their very expensive routes accessible with points.
Offer some good value rewards on Delta (i.e. South America) and to Europe from the US.
Malaysia Airlines has some good value short-haul redemptions in South East Asia on expensive routes (most routes in South East Asia are cheap paying $$$ though).
