What’s the deal with the Lufthansa 50000 credit card?

The Premier World MasterCard is back with a sign-up bonus of 50,000 miles. If you missed it last time (it usually appears every 6 months), here’s the lowdown on the card and why you should sign up now:

After your first purchase and payment of the $79 annual fee (it’s only waived for Senator and HON Circle members), you earn 20,000 miles – which is the usual sign-up bonus.

However, with the current offer, you also earn another 30,000 miles after a $5,000 spend in 3 months.

With the Lufthansa Miles & More Premier World MasterCard, you:

– Earn 2 award miles per dollar spent on ticket purchases from Miles & More integrated airline partners
– Earn 1 award mile per dollar on other MasterCard purchases
– Get 0% introductory APR for 15 months on balance transfers if made within 45 days of account opening (then 15.99% or 24.99% variable)
– Pay no foreign transaction fees
– Benefit from travel extras including baggage delay and trip cancellation
– Receive an annual companion ticket
– Can redeem miles for flight awards and upgrades on Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, SWISS, Star Alliance airlines and other partners
– Get free online FICO score access

You can redeem miles for flight awards and upgrades on Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, SWISS, Star Alliance member airlines and on other partners. As we reviewed last year, the best way to redeem Lufthansa miles is for United flights in Premium cabins. After making the $5,000 minimum spend, you’ll have a total of 55,000 miles. With Lufthansa, that’s more than enough to get you three one-way segments with United’s lie-flat Premium Service.

It’s actually 30% cheaper to redeem with Miles & More than with United and there’s no fuel surcharges and very low taxes ($2.50 per segment) to pay. Plus booking two one-way trips instead of a return can actually save you even more miles.

You could use your 55,000 miles for a round-trip to Hawaii or Europe, but there are better ways to utilize them. One of our favorite redemptions is the one-way business class ticket from Los Angeles or San Francisco to New York – lie-flat for 17,000 miles and no fuel surcharges!
