I’m currently ‘in the trenches’ with Singapore Airlines award booking. Until now, I was under the impression that you can only book:
– Singapore Airlines
– Star Alliance partner awards
– other partner airlines (like Virgin America)
I was under the impression that they can’t be mixed.
However, Singapore Airlines’ Terms and Conditions clearly spell it out that you can mix Singapore Airlines with other Star Alliance airlines, as long as you have two other Star Alliance airlines in your itinerary.
a. An itinerary may contain flights operated by a Star Alliance member airline (excluding Singapore Airlines), or flights operated by two or more Star Alliance member airlines (including Singapore Airlines). A maximum of six travel segments are allowed per itinerary.
Here is a situation where this could be useful:
Singapore Airlines flies from Singapore to Johannesburg – but if your final destination is, say, Dakar, Senegal, you would have to book two awards – one from Singapore to Johannesburg and one on to Dakar.
Instead you can book the whole trip by using 55,000 KrisFlyer miles and use a mix of Singapore Airlines, South African Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines from Johannesburg.
Of course, all other rules for a valid Singapore Airlines award booking need to be satisfied as well.
