Now that US Airways and American Airlines have merged, they have aligned their carry-on rules and checked baggage fees and exemptions. Other baggage rules may be different, however, so you need to check with the flight operator to ensure you have the correct information.
With US Airways baggage, you pay for your checked bags when you check-in at the airport or online. A bag fee is per person, each way and non-refundable.

What's the damage?
As of April 2014, the US Airways baggage fee for the first bag on a domestic flight is $25. This includes the US, Canada, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
It's the same cost for US Airways baggage to Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America for the first bag. However, the second bag for these countries is $40, whereas it's $35 for domestic flights.
It's interesting to note that if you're traveling to select cities in Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America, your first bag will be checked free:
Mexico – Leon/Guanajuato, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey
Haiti – Port Au Prince
Trinidad and Tobago – Port of Spain
Dominican Republic – Santo Domingo, Santiago
Jamaica – Kingston
Guatemala – Guatemala City
Nicaragua – Managua
Honduras – San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa
Plus Panama City and San Salvador both have a first and second free checked bag.
The first and second bags on transpacific flights as well as flights to Brazil and South America are free. The first bag on transatlantic flights are free, but the second is charged at *gulp* $100.
How to avoid US Airways baggage fees?
The first, second and third checked bags are all free for confirmed First Class or Business Class customers. For a domestic traveler, this saves $210 if you have 3 bags to check!
The first three checked bags are also free for:
– Dividend Miles Chairman's Preferred members
– AAdvantage Executive Platinum members
– oneworld Emerald members
Active US military with ID traveling with dependents on orders get the first five bags checked free. If on personal travel, the first three bags are checked free.
The first two checked bags are free for:
– Dividend Miles Gold members
– Platinum Preferred members
– AAdvantage Platinum members
– oneworld Sapphire members
The first bag is checked free for:
– Dividend Miles Silver Preferred members
– AAdvantage Gold members
– oneworld Ruby members
– Eligible US Airways MasterCard and Visa cardholders on domestic flights only
If you're not one of these eligible customers, check if you have a credit card with an airline that credits back US Airways baggage fees. Alternatively, you could simply avoid paying for checked bags and travel light instead 🙂
