Shanghai has a huge range of new 4 and 5 star hotels. It's not easy to make up your mind. Marriott is usually not my first choice but thanks to the Megabonus and a Welcome Back promotion I'd earn a free stay Category 5 stay every night. I also found a BRG rate reducing the rate/night to less than $100.

The Marriott City Center is located just off People's Square in Shanghai's center. It's in a much nicer or more lively location that the Pudong hotels on the other side of the river.

Since check-in is bureaucratic in China it takes an army of check-in agents and long lines to check everyone in. Now this is China so waiting in line is not an option for locals so the pushing and shoving and joggling for the next available agent is quite a scene.

Once I managed to check-in the room was just fantastic. I got a room in the 31st floor with a beautiful view. The bathroom had one of those look through windows but there were automatic window blinds.

The Internet was fast (remember to bring a VPN account to access Gmail, Facebook, Twitter etc). The AC works quiet and the bedding was just perfect. I think that's one of the best 'non-luxury business room' I ever got.

I also liked the staff - very courteous and rather good English at every interaction.

I did not get the chance to try the breakfast or other food at the hotel. There is a range of chain restaurants and coffee shops in the immediate vicinity. You won't be starving here.

All in all a hotel I'd be very happy to come back to.
